Each day, there’s potential for work-related eye injuries to occur in many workplaces aroudn New Zealand, which can result in pain, inconvenience and even loss of vision.

To prevent eye damage, it’s recommended you use of safety goggles to prevent, or at least reduce the risk of eye injuries.

Here are the most important things to keep in mind when buying your first pair of safety glasses.

Tips for Purchasing Safety Goggles

First, look for a pair of goggles with durable, shatter-proof glasses. The one thing that will stand between your eyes and a sharp object is the eyewear glass supported by the frame.

You might be wondering why you would need shatter-proof glasses when these are designed to be tough. The point is that you are not buying bullet-proof safety glasses.

While protective eyewear can be very durable, they could break under extreme pressure. With shatter-proof glass, you are assured that no glass fragment from the goggles will cause injury to you.

Second, remember that while the glass itself is designed to be extremely resilient and will not likely break against an accidental projectile, the material can and does deteriorate over time.

With regular use, wear and tear sets in and the glass could be weakened by frequent exposure to fragments and projectiles. Always check your safety eyewear before putting it on.

Buy the Best Safety Goggles

Next, keep an eye out for material quality. Polycarbonate protective glasses are often recommended due to their high quality, so expect to pay a higher price.

There are cheaper options made from recycled resins but take note that you will be getting what you paid for. Many of the cheaper products are not very durable and the glasses may even exhibit some distortion and/or discoloration over time.

Finally, and potentially most importantly, make sure the fit is just right. Safety eyewear should fit your face snugly – not too loose and not too tight.

If you bend down, it should not fall off your face. If you wear prescription lenses, you might also want to purchase a pair of safety eyewear that fits over your glasses. Or you could simply order a pair of prescription safety lenses for more convenience.

Safety goggles are a crucial part of eye protection on various environments such as home DIY projects like door and window repairs, to the more contemporary applications such as bike riding.

Goggles can be specifically designed for each of these uses or serve multiple purposes. Below are some of the more common ones, based on their function.

Convertible Safety Goggles

As their name suggests, convertible goggles are a type of safety eyewear that can be worn both as goggles and as glasses, depending on the activity you are doing. These usually come with interchangeable straps and temples, padded eye area to keep dust and debris away, and various shades of lenses from dark to clear.

Convertible goggles offer all the features of safety goggles and the added advantage of wearing them as fashion accessories.

Fit Over Goggles are great if you already wear prescription glasses. They are special goggles designed to allow you to wear the safety eyewear on top of your glasses, and are much larger than regular goggles.

They come with rubber straps and a large lens to accommodate your own glasses. Try on the fit over goggles before purchasing to evaluate their comfort. Do ensure that the goggle straps do not press onto your glasses’ temples.

Motorcycle Safety Goggles

Any motorcycle rider will tell you the importance of wearing safety goggles when riding. A good pair of goggles can improve the whole experience of riding by keeping out the wind and rain, or dust and debris and even bugs from interfering with your eyesight.

Getting specialized motorcycle goggles can be a much better deal than buying regular sunglasses because of the extra design features. Motorcycle goggles also come with a wide range of lenses, such as amber, gray, black and clear, and you can find a set of interchangeable lenses for more flexibility.

Welding jobs often presents a strenuous and dangerous work environment for the eyes because of the nature of the work. A welder’s eyes are potentially exposed to heat, debris and intense UV and infrared light which can damage the cornea.

A pair of welding goggles should ideally come with specialized filter lenses and rigid frame to keep all these problems at bay. Choose your safety goggles depending on the activities you intend to conduct and keep your eyes safe and potentially retain your eye sight for longer.

This is especially true if you do not do these projects on a regular basis, but you are just taking one on for the first time.

Safety Goggles To Reduce Accidents

Accidents can happen, but you can reduce the chances that you will be injured to almost nothing if you use all of the safety gear that you have at your disposal. For example, even something as simple as a pair of safety goggles can be crucial to many projects.

These lightweight, plastic goggles can be worn over your standard glasses in many cases. If they are not large enough for that, you may need to wear contact lenses with them. You can also get prescription safety goggles if you would like, though these do tend to be rather expensive.

One thing that you may want to consider, no matter which style of googles you decide to wear, is getting a strap to go around behind your head. This will keep them firmly in place even when you are doing a difficult physical task.

Safety Goggles Around Your Home

In order to see the importance, imagine what can happen while you are cutting branches off of a tree near your home. You need to do this from time to time so that the branches do not fall onto the home and cause a lot of damage.

If you cut them down under controlled conditions, you can direct them as they fall. However, you will need to climb a ladder and use a chainsaw to cut them down. This saw can throw a flurry of chips into the air. If you get these chips in your eyes, you could be badly injured.

Even if none of the chips hit your eyes hard enough to do damage, they could obscure your vision. When you are standing on a ladder with a saw in your hands, you need to be able to see perfectly. Safety goggles are able to protect you from even the largest pieces of wood, allowing you to work confidently and quickly.

These pieces of safety equipment are useful in many work settings such as factories and other industrial professions as well as in laboratories.

Get The Correct Safety Goggles For Your Profession

Construction workers and others who work around flying objects can also benefit from using goggles, but it is important to get the right kind for your profession.

For instance, you need strong goggles that are resistant to strong chemicals and other kinds of liquids if you work in a laboratory or other profession that requires you to work around liquids that can be dangerous to your eyes.

You also need safety goggles if you perform jobs such as welding, but these goggles may come as part of a face mask that you need to protect your entire face from sparks and other debris.

There are other professions in which you may not have considered needing safety goggles, but they are important nonetheless. If you drive regularly or use a bike or some other kind of motor vehicle such as a scooter or motorcycle, you may need some kind of protective eye gear. Not only should it keep objects out of your eyes, but it should also help you with visibility by keeping wind from distracting you as it rushes by.

Shaded Safety Goggles For Landscaping Work

You should also consider goggles if you work outside in any job such as landscaping. You may not be cutting down trees, stumps or other shrubbery, but you can still run the risk of getting debris in your eyes. You may also have to look into shaded goggles if you work in bright light or sunlight so that you do not get too much light in your eyes.

These days, many people use safety goggles beyond work as fashion statements. For instance, those into some fashions use goggles as an accessory all the time, but these tend to be a bit more old fashioned in their design. Others may even use more up to date styles depending on their preferences. In any case, these goggles can be quite useful when needed.

However, these are the same jobs that require strength and stamina and more often than not, have more risks than any other job.

Take welding as an example. This is definitely one job where protective gear is a must, particularly safety goggles.

These type of goggles are a type of protective gear for the eyes, most especially at times when we do certain activities, hobbies and livelihood where our eyes are exposed to harmful elements such as particulates, water or chemicals.

Safety Goggles: So Many Uses

These are also often used in the laboratories during experiments, as well as sports like swimming and snow boarding, to protect our eyes from extreme weather elements.

This type of goggles actually originated from the Eskimos, when they used to carve out snow goggles from caribou antlers, to help protect them from snow blindness. Snow goggles have greatly evolved during the 20th century with the advent of cars, which used to be open and have no wind shields.

It was then used to shield their eyes from dirt and wind while driving. When the first aircrafts were invented, it solidified its status as a necessary protective gear.

However, gone are the days when this type of goggles only served its purpose of shielding the eye area. In the present day, it has evolved to become even a fashion piece as models sashay down the runway, wearing their safety goggles as an accessory.

With a wide range of sizes, styles, colors, designs and other varieties to choose from, even music icons, especially rappers, now use glow-in-the-dark safety goggles to make a statement and standout in their music videos.

Safety Goggles: For Work and Fun

Even Lady Gaga, a popular artist known for her outrageous and bold fashion statement, made safety goggles more than just what they are, by putting studded diamonds and other crazy designs in them.

Indeed, safety goggles have gone a long way. However, whether your purpose of wearing it is for safety reasons or just for fashion, you should remember that wearing a safety goggles should not compromise your eyesight.

With literally hundreds of brands and styles to choose from however, choosing the most appropriate pair of glasses can prove to be a challenging task.

Understanding Safety Glasses

Understanding the essential features of eye protection, and knowing what additional characteristics would be beneficial in given circumstances, will help you, the consumer, to make an educated purchasing decision.

The most important feature to look for in all safety glasses is their degree of certification. Being certified ensures that a particular brand or model meets minimum safety requirements, and will be guaranteed to provide a minimum degree of protection.

Types of certification will vary depending upon geographical location and the nature of the glasses in question.

Many countries have minimum requirements concerning occupational safety materials, and will consequently have their own certification process.

If a particular brand makes claims of being certified by an agency that is not nationally or universally recognized, be sure to check the integrity of said agency before making any final purchases.

Additional features may vary depending upon brand and function including whether or not they are prescription as well as their size and the specificity of design (i.e.: women’s glasses or children’s glasses; models intended to fit over prescription eyeglasses; adjustable arms and/or temples).

Safety Glasses – Lens Types

Also whether they are polarized or fog resistant, and the material used for the lenses.

The most common lens materials are plastic polycarbonate, plastic, and trivex.

These materials are notable for their durability and impact resistance, with polycarbonate ranking highest, and trivex and other plastics ranking slightly lower.

Each of these materials has its advantages, but polycarbonate is generally the most popular since it can be coated for UV protection and scratch resistance.

Glass is not an appropriate material for safety glass lenses.

Regardless of which visual and/or practical features you choose for your safety glasses, the frames should be made of heat-resistant materials.

They should always provide a snug and appropriate fit, in order to function properly when it matters the most.

In addition, the bridge should be designed so that, should impact occur, it will distribute said impact evenly over the bridge of the nose instead of creating pressure points or causing breakage.

The eye is one of the most incredible organs in the body. It is also one of the frailest and most easily damaged. For this reason, it is extremely important that individuals always wear safety glasses when they are doing anything that could put their eyes at risk.

Safety glasses are usually made of plastics or polycarbonates and are generally shatterproof. This makes the wearer doubly safe: no debris can make contact with the eye and in case of a terrible accident; the glasses themselves will not injure the wearer.

Safety glasses are an absolute must for anyone who works in factories, laboratories, manufacturing environments, or other locations where the items being worked with might damage the eyes. Bits of material could fly up or chemicals could splash onto the eyes and cause severe damage.

Wearing a good pair of safety glasses protects one from these kinds of accidents. There are even glasses designed to be worn by welders to protect their eyes from welding flashes. These glasses are more like goggles, with darker, thicker lenses to deaden the bright welding flares.

Soldiers who wish to protect their eyes from debris and dust and other hazards of a battle environment wear safety glasses.

Safety Glasses: Function First

When picking out a pair of safety glasses, focus first on function. Be sure that they are thick enough to meet the needed situation. They should be comfortable, but remember that safety is the first priority. Safety glasses often feature different colored lenses, such as clear, yellow or red, but unless a work environment specifies otherwise, this should not be taken into account. Make sure that the glasses also provide protection from the side.

Many accidents are caused because people thought their regular prescription glasses would protect them. Those types of glasses only cover the direct part of the eye. Debris coming from below, above, or the side will not be stopped.

By wearing protective eyewear, individuals can preserve and protect one of their greatest assets—their eyes. So much relies on our eyesight that we rarely even think of everything we do because of what we can see.

Safety is a major concern in the workplace. One of the most important, and perhaps most neglected, components of maintaining a safe work environment is the use of safety glasses.

The eyes are a vital part of the human anatomy and very susceptible to damage. Proper eye protection can avoid major injury that can be detrimental to a career.

Safety Glasses in the Workplace

Without approved eyewear in the workplace, workers sustain many injuries that require immediate medical attention. A large number even lead to hospital stays mandating medical leave. These extended hospital visits may or may not be covered by the insurance provided by an employer.

Safety Glasses: Sometimes all the Protection You Need

The shocking part is that almost all of these incidents are those involving small, simple scraps of metal or similar materials flying from work sites at high speeds and striking workers in the eyes.

A simple plastic covering over the eyes, such as a pair of standard safety glasses, is adequate to protect against such shrapnel.

A variety of elaborate safety equipment is available on the market to give additional coverage to the face. These range from visors that extend to cover the nose and forehead to larger full-face visors with additional fittings to protect the top of the head and seal with a body suit for maximum protection against bacterial and physical threats.

However, many applications do not find this particularly useful, as coverage is not required past the eyes themselves. Although scraps of material can be hot and reach high velocities, it is unlikely that they will cause any harm to the skin or related harder surfaces. The eyes are an exceptionally vulnerable area on the face.

Most of the face is covered in skin. Skin provides more than adequate protection for most of the dangers of work. The eyes and inside of the nose, however, are composed of membranous surfaces that lack the elasticity and durability of skin.

In many work places, visors are advised to be used to protect the eyes as well as the inside of the nose. It must be noted that nostrils are generally small enough to prevent entry of even small shrapnel into the nasal cavity, negating the need for such protection. Thus, safety glasses are efficient to prevent hospitalization and less serious work-related injury.
